YES! Being yourself may feel risky, but not doing so is DANGEROUS! Share your most Authentic Self this holiday season! You just never know what might happen.

Case in point. I was in the Starbucks bathroom a few years back1527121_354408134698809_1884905029_n and heard someone singing ‘scooby doobie doo’ a la Frank Sinatra. I looked under the stall to find the feet attached to the voice and there was no one to be found.. on either side! Ahhh perhaps a holiday gift from Spirit, I thought.  A little break from the blaring holiday music heard everywhere I’d go. Heck I couldn’t even turn on the radio without another holiday greeting.  And frankly this Empath wants everything to feel real, not forced, even during the holidays.

Well eventually I did find the body that went with the voice. It was my fab friend, and then Chapters staff member, Wendy Kervin-Smith. She is always a shining example of being authentic anywhere, anytime. (If only I had time now to tell you how she came to be called Bubbles. Let me just say her joie de vivre gets her noticed!)

Want to get noticed for yourself instead of this year’s  ugly Christmas sweater? Then you are going to need to show up! The tree may be fake, but you don’t have to be!

Top 4 Tips for Keeping it Real This Holiday Season …

1. Honour your boundaries ~ Say yes to what feels meaningful to you and be honest enough with friends and family to say no when your heart just isn’t in it. You will be healthier and happier both. I remember an amazing women I worked with in the College system years ago who always ended up enjoying a quieter Christmas than she planned because it was the one time she gave herself permission to slow down and BE. Not so many appearances and events that she had to show up to.  And if she tried the same busy busy approach to her home life that was keeping her on the promotion track at work, she would promptly get sick as soon as she stepped out of her office and got home for the week off. Her body MADE her slow down. But you are not going to let that happen to you right? Boundaries are healthy to have on and off the job.

2. Put down the technology ~ Stop with the selfies and the crafting of an image to make others wish they were you. Instead,  get together, face to face, with those you love. Make real memories to cherish as time passes. Nothing beats a real hug over a (((hug))) online! Nothing! And trust me the world will spin a time or two without you posting about it.

3. Get outdoors ~ Even a few minutes each day will help you ground your energy and give you a great chance to practice some deep breathing. Take in the air around you. Notice how that feels. Wiggle your toes in your boots for a few moments to get present (or if you are lucky enough to be somewhere warm… feel the warmth of the sand on the bottoms of your feet).

Staying connected outdoors will help you stay connected inside.

Use all of your senses. They can provide helpful feedback if you are wanting to find out what you are authentically needing in each moment.

4. Focus on presence instead of presents ~ The little drummer boy gave the only thing he had, according to the song, he played his music. You have gifts too. Share those with others.

Two of my favourite presents I have been given at Christmas are a wonderful pair of homemade socks knitted by, you guessed it, that special Wendy who was mentioned above.  And the other is a red knit prayer scarf that a university friend made me years ago. She actually prayed and held sacred intentions while she did the work! Their ability to stay present and do something I admire but have never managed to master myself was indeed precious.

It is the gift of YOU that is special… how you express it is wide open. Maybe you bake or are handy with things or are a super gardener. A coupon for your services can be super.

But you know what? Gift or not at the holidays, it is you being present that matters most. So often we don’t sit and take the time to share and toturtle medicine - life is not a race it's a journey listen with loved ones. And isn’t that what it is really about?

So here is my early gift to you. A reminder. Heck a message even.

You have license to chill this holiday.

Show up.

Be you.

Be grateful.

Share the love that you are.

Happy Holidays!

Many blessings, EagleSpirit
