Even when we aren’t asked. Oops! Red flag. Red flag. “Sensitive people care when the world doesn’t because we understand waiting to be rescued and no one shows up. We have rescued ourselves, so many times that we have become self taught in the art of compassion for those forgotten.” Shannon L. Alder There I was at a pet store a few years back, and feeling so torn as I stared at that little puppy in the glassed in cage. I knew I couldn’t take him and was so distraught. (Fellow animal lovers you all get this right?) So at the very least I could say a prayer and send him a message. So I got quiet and prayed. ‘Don’t worry little fellow, the perfect person is coming for you. You will have a forever home soon.’ And do you know what happened? I heard back from him, ‘so will you.’ Gulp! Well I lost it! My lifelong search for a place to BE, to call home … he hit it on the head, that little fellow. I cried. It pointed out 2 key things for me. #1. Rescuing animals does indeed fill an unspoken need. I often think that our animals rescue us. Not the other way around. I have adopted a number of fur babies over the years. Right now I share my home with my two rescue dogs, Bliss and Shanti. #2. The other thing I realized, and have made a key part of Empath 101 is that rescuing people is enabling, not empowering. We need to take off our super hero capes and answer only the calls that really are coming in for us as part of our divine purpose. Often our need to focus on others’ issues is a distraction from doing the good self-care that we need to do. Self-care is important because we can’t help others (which you know is part of our divine purpose this go round) if our own well has run dry. Affirmation: Daily self-care allows me to show up loving and compassionate with others when I am called to be of service. I fill up my own cup first, so that I have an abundance of energy to share with others.
